In the face of the climate emergency, the real estate sector must take the lead. As heatwaves become more frequent and warnings mount, the OID, with the support of the French Governement, has launched a Charter for adaptation to climate change. This voluntary and ambitious initiative is primarily aimed at project owners, with a clear objective: to organise a collective and concrete response. The charter addresses three key areas – adapting assets, setting an example, and fostering knowledge within the value chain – and is accompanied by a comprehensive toolkit to facilitate the transition to action. Above all, it aims at creating a community of signatories who will work together towards this goal.
The charter offers a flexible and pragmatic framework, designed to strengthen the sector’s resilience and kick-start a shared learning process.
Designed primarily for project owners, the charter is intended to be extended to other stakeholders in the sector in the medium term.
The charter sets out a voluntary yet ambitious framework, based on three complementary levels of commitment. Signatories first commit to taking action on their assets by carrying out climate risk assessments, setting operational targets and implementing concrete and effective adaptation measures. They also commit to mobilising their organisations internally, in particular through staff training and by setting an example at their own sites and workplaces.
To support the implementation of these commitments, the charter draws on an operational and evolving toolkit. This brings together examples of actions, methodological resources, monitoring indicators, and training programmes, enabling stakeholders to adapt their approaches to their specific context, resources and timetable. Aiming at minimising the reporting burden, the charter prioritises a collective dynamic of learning and continuous improvement.
The launch event took place on 13 October 2025, during an evening conference attended by senior management from the first 19 signatory companies, followed by the official signing of the charter. Signing events are organised regularly to welcome new stakeholders to the charter.
By signing the charter, companies commit to participating in workshops and sharing their best practices and expertise with the community of signatories.
Progress towards the charter’s objectives is monitored throughout the year via two workshops and a series of surveys organised by the OID. Signatories thus contribute to the development of resource sheets and the sharing of best practices for the benefit of the entire sector.
