Biodiversity

The loss of biodiversity is accelerating at an unprecedented rate as a result of human activities. Land-use change, habitat fragmentation, pollution and climate change: these are all pressures that weaken ecosystems and jeopardise the services they provide to our societies.

The real estate sector is directly affected. Through its land use and influence on the environment, it plays a key role in the preservation — or degradation — of living organisms. Integrating biodiversity into projects is no longer an option: it is an essential condition for building resilient, sustainable and liveable communities.

In light of these challenges, the OID is committed to enhancing the understanding of biodiversity issues and providing shared methods and tools to enable scaling up.

A COLLECTIVE EFFORT TO PROTECT THE NATURAL WORLD:

To make biodiversity a cornerstone of sustainable real estate development, on par with climate and energy, the OID aims to:

1. Bring stakeholders together around a shared vision
2. Build capacity within the sector
3. Accelerate the integration of biodiversity into real estate projects

With this in mind, the OID draws on our BIODI-Bat tool, hosted on the R4RE resilience analysis platform, and our applied research programme, the Biodiversity Impulsion Group (BIG).

BIODIVERSITY PROGRAMME: structuring and accelerating action

Faced with these challenges, the Observatoire de l’Immobilier Durable (OID) is committed to supporting the sector’s transformation.

With the launch of the Biodiversity Impulsion Group (BIG) initiative, the OID is bringing together stakeholders in the real estate sector around a shared ambition: to effectively integrate biodiversity into strategies and projects.

BIG is a collaborative workspace designed to:
* Organise knowledge and reference frameworks
* Share feedback and lessons learnt
* Develop practical tools
* Establish industry-wide standards

BIODI-BAT TOOL ON R4RE: Analyse biodiversity challenges

At the heart of this approach, the OID has developed BIODI-Bat, a tool designed to assess the impacts of real estate development projects on biodiversity and a practical tool for moving from awareness to action.

Biodi-Bat enables users to:

  • Measure a project’s impact on living organisms
  • Formalise design choices
  • Identify areas for improvement
  • Highlight co-benefits, particularly those related to water and ecosystem services
